Quick answer
Our top pick for dogs in the UAE is AyurPet HipOJoint, chew-free Ayurvedic joint drops with glucosamine, boswellia and turmeric, rated 4.65 stars from 115 reviews. Pair it with a properly dosed omega-3, which has the strongest evidence. What changes in the UAE is everything around the bowl: heat-limited exercise, weight gain, marble floors and hot pavements.
Key takeaways
- Our top pick: HipOJoint, AyurPet's Ayurvedic joint drops, rated 4.65 stars by 115 customers.
- Add omega-3, which has the best evidence. A 2022 meta-analysis of 72 trials found the clearest pain benefit for omega-3, weak efficacy for collagen and a "very marked non-effect" for glucosamine with chondroitin.
- The UAE's big risk is weight, not the supplement aisle. When summer heat cuts walks short, large breeds gain weight, and extra weight loads sore joints. In one small trial, overweight dogs with hip arthritis that lost 11 to 18% of body weight limped substantially less.
- Fix the floors. Marble and tiles are slippery for stiff dogs; the PDSA advises rugs or anti-slip mats.
- Protect paws on hot ground. Asphalt can reach about 52°C (125°F) in direct sun when the air is only 25°C (77°F). Use the 7-second hand test.
- A limping dog needs a vet first. Supplements support a pain plan; they do not replace one.

What is the best joint supplement for dogs in the UAE?
Our top pick is HipOJoint, used alongside a measurable daily dose of omega-3 (EPA and DHA) from fish oil or green-lipped mussel oil, given every day for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Omega-3 is the foundation the research supports most clearly.
#1 Our top pick · Best overall
Why it leads
- Ayurveda and modern actives together: glucosamine with Shallaki (boswellia) and Haridra (turmeric), Ayurveda's classic joint herbs.
- Built for UAE summers: liquid drops add no treat calories in the months when walks shrink and weight creeps up.
- One bottle for any size: easy to dose for a 6 kg (13 lb) Shih Tzu or a 35 kg (77 lb) German Shepherd, with nothing to chew for seniors with sore mouths.
- Clean label: human-grade ingredients, lab tested and certified, no added chemicals, vet and pet approved, shipped to the UAE.
Rated 4.65 stars from 115 customer reviews. In AyurPet's own in-home trial, 86% of owners reported improved mobility and 92% of dogs took the taste readily (internal, not peer-reviewed).
Not an omega-3 product, so pair it with fish oil; not for shellfish-allergic dogs without your vet's okay; not a substitute for a vet's pain plan.
See HipOJointSee the Gut & Joint ComboThe strongest summary of the evidence is a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis by Barbeau-Grégoire and colleagues, which pooled 72 trials in dogs and cats with osteoarthritis. Omega-3-enriched diets and omega-3 supplements showed clear pain relief. Collagen showed weak efficacy, and glucosamine with chondroitin showed a "very marked non-effect", leading the authors to say those products should no longer be recommended for arthritis pain.
Head-to-head data point the same way. In a 2023 placebo-controlled trial of 75 dogs with hip osteoarthritis, two green-lipped mussel oil extracts improved weight-bearing on a force plate at 4 and 6 weeks, to a similar degree as the anti-inflammatory drug carprofen, while glucosamine and chondroitin did not. Vets' subjective scores did not change in any group, which is a useful reminder that these effects are modest.

Why do joint problems need a different plan in the UAE?
Dogs in the UAE do not have different joints, but they live a different life. Long, hot summers shorten exercise, many homes have polished stone or tiled floors, outdoor surfaces get dangerously hot, and the most popular family dogs are large breeds. Each of these affects how a stiff dog copes.
Which popular UAE breeds are most prone to joint problems?
Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Huskies are popular family dogs in the UAE, and all are medium to large, active breeds. In a UK study of 455,557 dogs in primary veterinary care, risk factors for an osteoarthritis diagnosis included breed (Labrador and Golden Retriever were named), higher body weight and age over 8 years. Huskies add a separate UAE problem: a thick double coat makes them poorly suited to exercising in the heat, so their activity often drops sharply in summer.
Does the summer heat make joint problems worse?
Heat itself has not been shown to worsen arthritis, but what heat does to routines matters. When walks shrink to a few minutes at dawn for four or five months, many dogs lose muscle and gain weight, and both put more strain on sore joints.
Weight is the factor with the clearest evidence. In a small trial of 9 overweight dogs with hip osteoarthritis, losing 11 to 18% of body weight substantially reduced hind limb lameness on its own. In a lifelong study of 48 Labrador Retrievers, dogs fed 25% less than their pair-mates lived longer and developed signs of chronic disease later. For safe summer walking times, see our guide to walking dogs in UAE summer heat.
Are marble and tiled floors bad for a dog's joints?
Slippery floors are a real problem for dogs that already have stiff joints, because they slip and struggle to get up. The PDSA's arthritis advice is to use rugs, carpets or anti-slip mats to make floors less slippery, and to avoid letting arthritic dogs jump, skid or chase balls.
For puppies of large breeds, there is also evidence about how they move at home. A Norwegian study of 501 large-breed puppies, including Labradors, found that walking on stairs from birth to 3 months was linked to a higher risk of hip dysplasia, while off-leash exercise on soft ground in that period was linked to a lower risk. Runners along your dog's daily routes and baby gates on stairs are cheap and sensible.
Is walking on hot sand and pavement a joint issue?
Hot ground is mainly a paw-burn issue, but it changes how stiff dogs move and how much exercise they get. Washington State University's veterinary college reports that in direct sun with no wind, asphalt can reach about 52°C (125°F) when the air is only 25°C (77°F). Its advice, which the UK's Kennel Club also gives, is to press the back of your hand on the ground: if you cannot hold it there for 7 seconds, it is too hot for paws. Sand, paving and artificial turf in full sun can get very hot too.
How did we judge joint supplements for UAE dogs?
We used six criteria, in this order:
- Evidence in dogs for the main active. Randomised, placebo-controlled dog trials count most; lab, rat and human data count least.
- Dose transparency. The label should show milligrams of each active per serving, not a "proprietary blend".
- A format your dog will take every day. Chew, tablet, capsule, powder or liquid: consistency beats everything.
- Stability in heat. Fish oils oxidise and soft chews can soften in heat and humidity, which matters when parcels sit in a hot delivery van or a car.
- Safety and interactions. Fish oil needs care with blood thinners or a history of pancreatitis; mussel and many glucosamine sources are shellfish-derived.
- Fit for your dog's weight. A 6 kg (13 lb) Pomeranian and a 35 kg (77 lb) German Shepherd need very different amounts.
Which type of joint supplement is best? A comparison by ingredient
HipOJoint is our top pick. By ingredient type, omega-3 is the best-supported, green-lipped mussel oil a reasonable alternative, and UC-II collagen, boswellia and turmeric are promising but under-studied. Glucosamine with chondroitin is very safe but has the weakest evidence for pain.
| Ingredient type | Evidence in dogs | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
AyurPet HipOJoint #1 OUR TOP PICK |
Built on boswellia and turmeric (early dog trials) with glucosamine; centuries of Ayurvedic use | Liquid, no treat calories; rated 4.65 by 115 customers | Not an omega-3, so pair with fish oil | Best overall: daily Ayurvedic joint support on top of omega-3 |
| Omega-3 fish oil (EPA + DHA) | Strongest | Best-proven; easy to dose by weight; helps skin and coat | Oxidises in heat once opened; large dogs need several capsules | Almost every stiff dog, as the base |
| Green-lipped mussel oil | Moderate | Small capsule; trial data on concentrated oil extracts | Not for shellfish-allergic dogs; mussel powder and oil differ | Dogs that refuse fish oil |
| UC-II (undenatured type II collagen) | Early; weak in pooled analysis | Tiny daily dose; several positive small trials | Small, often product-specific studies | An add-on for active dogs, with your vet's okay |
| Boswellia (Shallaki) | Early, limited | Long traditional use; plausible anti-inflammatory mechanism | No placebo-controlled trial of boswellia alone in dogs; quality varies | An Ayurvedic layer on top of omega-3 |
| Turmeric / curcumin (Haridra) | Mixed | One placebo-controlled dog trial with a positive vet assessment | Poorly absorbed alone; care with blood thinners | Owners who want a herbal add-on |
| Glucosamine + chondroitin | Weakest for pain | Very safe; widely sold | Little or no pain benefit in pooled trials; often shellfish-derived | An add-on only, never the whole plan |
Is fish oil the best joint supplement for dogs in Dubai?
For most dogs, yes: a fish oil with clearly labelled EPA and DHA is the best place to start. In a randomised, double-blinded trial of 38 dogs with osteoarthritis, dogs on a food with 3.5% fish-oil omega-3 improved peak weight-bearing by 5.6% over 90 days, against 0.4% on a control food. Our global guide has study doses by weight. In the UAE, buy bottle sizes you will finish within the time the label recommends after opening, store them as the label directs, and never leave a delivery sitting in the sun.
Is green-lipped mussel worth it?
Green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), a New Zealand shellfish, is a reasonable alternative if your dog will not take fish oil. The 75-dog trial above used concentrated mussel oil extracts, not whole mussel powder, so check which one a product contains. Skip it entirely if your dog has a shellfish allergy.
Does UC-II collagen work for dogs?
UC-II, short for undenatured type II collagen, has a growing set of small studies. A 2023 scoping review of 26 records concluded that it reduced lameness and improved activity in dogs with osteoarthritis, but that more studies are needed. The 2022 meta-analysis, which weighted trials by quality, rated collagen's efficacy as weak. Our view: a reasonable add-on, not a replacement for omega-3.
Do boswellia and turmeric help dogs' joints?
Ayurveda, India's traditional system of medicine, has used Shallaki (Boswellia serrata, the gum resin of the Indian frankincense tree) and Haridra (turmeric) for stiff, painful joints for centuries, classically to calm Vata in the joints. What science is finding: in an open Swiss study of 29 dogs given a boswellia resin extract for 6 weeks, vets reported less lameness and stiffness, but there was no placebo group. Turmeric was tested in a placebo-controlled trial of 61 dogs: investigators' overall assessment favoured the turmeric extract, but force-plate measurements showed no difference.
Research in dogs is still catching up with tradition. For more depth, read our guides to boswellia for dogs and to glucosamine for dogs.
How do I choose a joint supplement that's available in the UAE?
Choose a product whose label shows each active in milligrams, whose main ingredient has dog evidence, and that reaches you in good condition. Brand recognition matters less than those three things.
- Read the actives, not the front of the pack. Look for EPA and DHA in milligrams, not just "fish oil 1,000 mg".
- Check the expiry date and storage advice as soon as the parcel arrives, and refuse anything that arrives soft, leaking or smelling rancid.
- Avoid human products unless your vet approves. Doses are not designed for dogs, and some human chews contain sweeteners that are unsafe for dogs.
- Tell your vet what you are adding, especially if your dog takes pain relief, blood thinners or has a shellfish allergy. Your vet can also confirm whether the stiffness is arthritis at all.
- Give it 6 to 8 weeks at the right dose before judging, and keep a simple weekly note of how your dog gets up, climbs and walks.
What else helps a stiff dog in the UAE besides supplements?
A lean body, regular low-impact exercise and a non-slip home do more for most stiff dogs than any supplement. The 2022 AAHA Pain Management Guidelines describe chronic pain care as multimodal, combining medication with non-drug options, and supplements are only one small part of that picture.
How do I keep my dog lean through the UAE summer?
Cut food when exercise drops, not after the weight appears. Weigh your dog monthly, count treats and chews in the daily calories, and ask your vet for a target weight. In a trial of 29 overweight dogs with osteoarthritis, calorie restriction combined with an intensive physiotherapy programme gave the best improvement in mobility and the most weight loss.
Is swimming or hydrotherapy good for dogs with stiff joints?
Yes, for many dogs it is one of the best summer options. Water's buoyancy reduces stress on joints while its resistance builds muscle, according to the American Kennel Club, and the PDSA describes hydrotherapy as useful exercise that doesn't put too much strain on joints. Ask your vet first, use trained staff for structured hydrotherapy, never force a dog that dislikes water, and rinse off chlorine or salt afterwards.
What exercise is safest for joints in the hot months?
The PDSA recommends regular short walks each day for dogs with arthritis, unless your vet advises otherwise. In a UAE summer that means short walks around sunrise and late evening, on grass or shaded paths where possible, plus gentle indoor activity such as sniffing games and slow lead walks along a corridor. Avoid high-impact ball chasing on hard floors.

UAE joint-care checklist
Four habits that matter more than any supplement
For Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Huskies and every stiff dog living with UAE heat and hard floors.
1. Make floors grippy
Put rugs, runners or anti-slip mats on marble and tiles along the routes your dog uses every day. Gate stairs for puppies and stiff dogs.
2. Keep your dog lean
Cut food when summer walks get shorter. Overweight dogs with hip arthritis that lost 11 to 18% of body weight limped substantially less.
3. Test the ground
Asphalt can reach 52°C (125°F) in sun when the air is 25°C (77°F). If your hand can't stay down for 7 seconds, it's too hot.
4. Swim, don't sprint
Hydrotherapy or supervised swimming builds muscle with less stress on joints. Ask your vet first and keep sessions short.
See a vet first if your dog
suddenly won't bear weight on a leg, has a swollen or hot joint, is young and already stiff, or has burnt paw pads.

AyurPet's take
We believe Ayurveda's joint herbs deserve a place in every stiff dog's routine, which is why HipOJoint is our top pick. In a UAE summer, pair it with the basics: runners on the marble, fewer calories when walks get short, and a properly dosed omega-3.
Skip it if your dog has a sudden limp, a swollen joint or acute pain (that is a job for your vet), a shellfish allergy, or several medications without your vet's okay.
See a vet before buying anything if your dog
- Suddenly cannot bear weight on a leg, or starts limping after a slip, jump or fall
- Cries out, guards a joint, or has a joint that looks swollen or feels hot
- Is a young large-breed dog that is already stiff or "bunny hopping"
- Is stiff and also has a fever, lethargy or loss of appetite
- Has red, blistered or raw paw pads after a walk on hot ground
- Already takes anti-inflammatories, steroids or blood thinners
Joint care often comes alongside other age-related changes. For the bigger picture, see our guide to the best supplements for senior dogs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best joint supplement for dogs in the UAE?
Our top pick is AyurPet HipOJoint, Ayurvedic joint drops with glucosamine, boswellia and turmeric, rated 4.65 stars from 115 reviews. Pair it with a fish oil or green-lipped mussel oil with clearly labelled EPA and DHA, which has the strongest evidence. Glucosamine with chondroitin alone has the weakest support for pain.
Are marble floors bad for dogs with arthritis?
They make slipping more likely, and dogs with arthritis are prone to slipping and struggle to get up. The PDSA advises rugs, carpets or anti-slip mats. Cover your dog's daily routes, from bed to bowl to door.
Can I walk my arthritic dog in the UAE summer?
Yes, with care. Walk briefly around sunrise and late evening, choose grass or shade, and do the 7-second hand test first: asphalt in direct sun can reach about 52°C (125°F) when the air is only 25°C (77°F).
Is hydrotherapy good for dogs with joint problems?
For many dogs, yes. Buoyancy reduces stress on joints while water resistance builds muscle. Ask your vet first, use trained staff for structured sessions, and do not force a dog that dislikes water.
How long do joint supplements take to work in dogs?
The dog trials in this guide measured results after 4 weeks to about 3 months. Give a supplement 6 to 8 weeks at the correct dose before judging it, and keep weekly notes on how your dog gets up and walks.
Do glucosamine supplements work for dogs?
The evidence for pain relief is weak. A 2022 meta-analysis of 72 trials found a very marked non-effect for glucosamine with chondroitin. They are very safe, so some vets use them as an add-on, but they should not be the whole plan.
Can supplements replace my dog's pain medication?
No. Supplements can support joint health, but a dog in pain needs a veterinary diagnosis and a proper pain plan. Never stop prescribed medication without talking to your vet.
Before starting any joint supplement, especially for a senior dog or a dog on medication, check with your vet. If you'd like guidance from home, our online vet consultation can help.
