Probiotics for Dogs UK: Best Buys and the Strain They Share

Quick answer

For everyday gut support, our pick is AyurPet GoodGut+, an Ayurvedic herbal formula, not a live probiotic. If you want a true probiotic, Purina FortiFlora is the best-documented in the UK. Pro-Kolin Advanced, Protexin Synbiotic D-C and YuMOVE Digestive Care use the same bacterial strain in different formats.

Maybe it started after a course of antibiotics. Or the new food. Or it just never quite settled: soft stools on Monday, fine on Wednesday, a long night of gurgling on Friday. So you search "probiotics for dogs UK" and find a dozen pastes, sachets and tablets that all sound different.

Here is something the packaging will not tell you: most of the UK's best-known dog probiotics contain the same bacterium. Once you know that, choosing gets much simpler. We also make a gut formula, GoodGut+, and we will be straight about what it is and is not.

Transparency: AyurPet makes GoodGut+. It is an Ayurvedic herbal gut formula, not a live probiotic, and we have said so throughout. We rank it first for everyday gut support and name the best pure probiotic separately. Competitor details were checked on each brand's UK website or UK vet literature on 21 October 2026.

Why do so many UK dog probiotics contain the same strain?

In the UK, a probiotic added to pet food or a supplement must be an authorised feed additive, a "gut flora stabiliser", and very few bacterial strains are authorised for dogs. The one you will see again and again is Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415, labelled with the code 4b1705 or 4b1707.

The two codes are separate authorisations for preparations of the same strain; the 4b1707 preparation, for example, was re-authorised for dogs and cats as a gut flora stabiliser under EU Regulation 2015/1053, the regime the UK's feed rules grew from. Check the "additives" line on the back of the pack: FortiFlora lists E. faecium SF68 NCIMB 10415 (4b1705), while Pro-Kolin Advanced, Synbiotic D-C and YuMOVE Digestive Care list E. faecium DSM 10663/NCIMB 10415 (4b1707 or E1707).

So between these four you are mostly choosing a format, a dose and the extras around the bacterium (clays, fibre, prebiotics), not a different microbe.

A label decoder showing that four UK dog probiotics list the same species and deposit number, Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415: Purina FortiFlora (SF68, code 4b1705, minimum 500 million CFU per 1 g sachet), Protexin Pro-Kolin Advanced (4b1707, 200 million CFU per gram, plus kaolin, montmorillonite, pectin and psyllium), Protexin Synbiotic D-C (4b1707, 2 billion CFU per capsule) and YuMOVE Digestive Care (E1707, 200 million per tablet). AyurPet GoodGut+ is shown separately as an Ayurvedic herbal formula with no live bacteria.

Do probiotics actually work for dogs?

For a short bout of diarrhoea, probiotics may shorten it slightly, but the effect in dogs is small and the trials are small. For long-running gut problems, diet does more. That is the honest summary of the research, and it shapes how we rank.

A 2019 systematic review of 17 dog studies found "a very limited and possibly clinically unimportant effect" for acute gut upsets, and no clear added benefit over diet for chronic disease. In a 2019 placebo-controlled trial of 60 dogs with acute diarrhoea, dogs on a probiotic reached normal stools in 3.5 days on average, versus 4.6 days on metronidazole and 4.8 on placebo: encouraging, but not statistically significant. Quality matters too. When researchers tested 25 veterinary probiotic products, only 2 had both an acceptable label and the claimed count, which is one reason to choose a named, authorised strain.

#1 Best overall for everyday gut support: AyurPet GoodGut+

GoodGut+ is our pick for dogs whose digestion is a bit unsettled day to day and whose owners want herbal, food-based support rather than another dose of bacteria. It contains no live probiotic. It is a liquid blend of ten Ayurvedic herbs and spices, built around Triphala and milk thistle, stirred into meals.

#1 Our top pick · Best overall for everyday gut support

AyurPet GoodGut+ digestive drops

Why it leads for everyday support

  • The whole gut, not one microbe: Triphala (three fruits Ayurveda has used for centuries to keep digestion regular), milk thistle and Bhumi Amla for the liver side of digestion, Yashtimadhu (liquorice root) and slippery elm for the gut lining, and fennel, ginger, cumin and black pepper, the kitchen spices of an Indian meal.
  • Food-first thinking: it works alongside the bowl, where most lasting gut change happens, rather than adding another isolated ingredient.
  • Liquid drops: nothing to break down ("Liquid absorbs. Chews guess."), and easy to mix into wet food.
  • Clean label: 100% Ayurvedic, human-grade ingredients, lab tested and certified, no added chemicals.
  • Owner proof: rated 4.7 stars from 51 reviews.

Honest cons

  • It is not a probiotic and contains no live bacteria; if your vet has asked for a probiotic, use one of the products below.
  • Research on these herbs in dogs is still catching up with tradition: milk thistle has been studied mainly for liver injury, and Triphala and slippery elm have no dog trials yet. It ships from theayurpet.store rather than UK shops.

The UK probiotics, reviewed

2. Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora. Best pure probiotic.

Purina's UK vet guide lists E. faecium SF68 NCIMB 10415 (4b1705) at a minimum 5 x 108 CFU per gram, in a 1 g sachet sprinkled on food once a day, continued until at least a week after stools are normal. Pros: one named, microencapsulated strain with the longest research history, a palatable meat base, and Purina says it is safe from weaning and in pregnant or nursing dogs. Cons: its base is pork and poultry derivatives, and Purina itself says it is not recommended for dogs with specific food allergies; the dog evidence for SF68 is modest, as the review above shows.

3. Protexin Pro-Kolin Advanced. Best for: a short-term upset, in a paste.

Protexin lists E. faecium DSM 10663/NCIMB 10415 (4b1707) at 2 x 108 CFU per gram, plus kaolin and montmorillonite clays, pectin, psyllium, a prebiotic (oligofructose and acacia) and beta-glucans, given twice daily by syringe for 2 to 3 days or as your vet advises. Pros: the binders and fibre firm stools quickly; liver-flavoured paste is easy to give. Cons: designed for short courses, not daily use; the probiotic dose per syringe is not stated on the page.

4. Protexin Synbiotic D-C. Best for: the highest count in one capsule.

The same 4b1707 strain at 2 x 109 CFU per capsule, with the Preplex prebiotic, once daily, according to Protexin. Pros: a clear per-dose count, and the capsule can be opened onto food or hidden in a treat. Cons: no fibre or binders for a sudden upset, and no dog-specific dose by weight on the page.

5. YuMOVE Digestive Care Pre & Probiotic. Best for: a daily tablet from a high-street brand.

Per Lintbells, each tablet has 200 million E. faecium DSM 10663/NCIMB 10415, plus a prebiotic complex of MOS, scFOS and beta-glucans; 1 tablet up to 10 kg, 2 for 11 to 25 kg, 3 for 26 to 40 kg and 4 above, from 12 weeks. Pros: dosed by weight, prebiotic-rich, six-week money-back guarantee. Cons: a 30 kg dog takes three tablets a day; the count per tablet is lower than Synbiotic D-C's capsule.

How to choose for your dog

Match the product to the problem, not the advert. Start with the most likely cause, and remember that the bowl matters more than any sachet.

  1. A one-off upset in a bright, eating dog: a few days of Pro-Kolin Advanced or FortiFlora, bland food, plenty of water. If it lasts more than 48 hours, see your vet.
  2. During antibiotics: ask your vet; Purina advises giving FortiFlora at least two hours apart from the antibiotic and for a week after.
  3. Wobbly digestion that comes and goes, gas, a fussy appetite: GoodGut+ daily, a steady diet, and fewer extras.
  4. Food allergy: FortiFlora's base is pork and poultry, so ask your vet which product suits your dog's diet; a herbal formula such as GoodGut+ adds no animal protein.
  5. Blood in stools, vomiting, lethargy, or a puppy with diarrhoea: vet first, supplements later. Our guide to diarrhoea in dogs covers the red flags.
A decision guide matching UK dog gut problems to products: a one-off upset to Pro-Kolin Advanced or FortiFlora for a few days, antibiotics to FortiFlora given two hours apart and for a week after, everyday wobbly digestion and gas to GoodGut+ with a steady diet, food allergy to checking the product base (FortiFlora is pork and poultry), and blood, vomiting, lethargy or puppy diarrhoea to the vet first.

AyurPet's take

A probiotic is a useful tool for a rough few days. But in Ayurveda, digestion is Agni, the digestive fire, and you look after it every day: regular mealtimes, warm rather than fridge-cold food, no constant snacking, and gentle spices in tiny amounts. That is the gap GoodGut+ is made for.

Try this tonight: serve dinner at room temperature, skip the extra treats, and add a teaspoon of plain cooked pumpkin or rice water if stools are soft. If your vet has prescribed a probiotic, keep it; GoodGut+ can sit alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best probiotic for dogs in the UK?

Purina FortiFlora (E. faecium SF68) is the best-documented pure probiotic sold in the UK. For everyday gut support without live bacteria, our pick is AyurPet GoodGut+, an Ayurvedic herbal formula.

Is GoodGut+ a probiotic?

No. GoodGut+ is a blend of ten Ayurvedic herbs and spices, including Triphala, milk thistle, slippery elm, ginger and fennel. It contains no live bacteria, so it can be used alongside a probiotic if your vet recommends one.

Is FortiFlora the same as Pro-Kolin?

They use the same species and deposit number, Enterococcus faecium NCIMB 10415, under different feed additive codes (4b1705 and 4b1707). FortiFlora is a once-daily sachet; Pro-Kolin Advanced is a short-course paste with clays and fibre.

How long should I give my dog a probiotic?

For a simple upset, Protexin suggests 2 to 3 days of Pro-Kolin Advanced, and Purina suggests continuing FortiFlora until a week after stools are normal. Longer use should be agreed with your vet.

Can I give my dog human probiotics?

It is better not to. Human products use strains and amounts not authorised for dogs and may contain sweeteners such as xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Choose a dog product with a named strain.

Gut trouble that lasts more than a couple of days, or comes with blood, vomiting or tiredness, needs a vet, not a supplement.
