Quick answer
Our top pick is the AyurPet Original Himalayan Yak Cheese Chew: three ingredients, up to 6 hours of chewing, fully edible, and it wears down rather than splintering. Bully sticks are a softer, shorter option, and a stuffed rubber toy is safest for puppies. Avoid antlers, cooked bones and very hard nylon, which can fracture teeth.
Key takeaways
- Our top pick: the AyurPet Original Himalayan Yak Cheese Chew, 87% protein, 100% vegetarian and rawhide-free.
- Every long-lasting chew is a trade-off. The harder a chew is, the longer it lasts and the higher the risk to teeth. VCA Animal Hospitals advises removing antlers, bones, cow hooves, nylon chews and pizzle sticks for this reason.
- Size matters more than brand. Pick a chew too big to swallow, size up for power chewers, and take it away once it is small enough to gulp.
- Chews have calories. One 6-inch bully stick can supply about 9% of a 23 kg dog's daily calories, or 30% of a 4.5 kg dog's. Keep all treats under 10% of daily calories.
- Always supervise, especially with a new chew and in multi-dog homes.
- Puppies need softer options during teething, which runs from about 3 to 6 months.
Disclosure: AyurPet makes Himalayan yak cheese chews. We've included them and explained exactly why, and we've been fair to the alternatives, including where a different chew is the better choice for your dog. Competitor details were checked on each brand's own website in October 2026.
What are the best long lasting dog chews?
For most healthy adult dogs, a correctly sized yak cheese chew, such as our top pick, is the best long-lasting edible chew: it keeps a dog busy for hours, it is digestible, and it wears down slowly rather than splintering. For puppies, seniors with dental disease and dogs who crunch rather than gnaw, a stuffed and frozen rubber toy is the safer long-lasting option.
Chewing is not a luxury for dogs. The ASPCA notes that chewing keeps jaws strong and teeth clean, relieves boredom and can ease mild stress or frustration. A good long-lasting chew channels that need onto something safe, instead of your sofa legs. The question is which chew gives the most chewing time for the least risk.

How we chose the best long lasting chews
- Tooth safety. Does the chew bend or wear down, or is it hard enough to break a tooth?
- Swallowing and choking risk. Can a dog bite off or swallow a large chunk?
- Chewing time. Minutes or hours for an average chewer?
- Ingredients and hygiene. Short, recognisable ingredient lists and low contamination risk score higher.
- Calories. A chew that lasts all afternoon should not also supply a third of the day's food.
- Fit for your dog. Age, size, chewing style and dental health change the answer.

AyurPet Original Himalayan Yak Cheese Chew
Why it leads
- Up to 6 hours of chewing: a hard Himalayan cheese, based on traditional chhurpi, that softens slowly with saliva and is eaten gradually rather than snapping into shards.
- Only 3 ingredients: milk (99.98%), lime and salt. No rawhide, no meat by-products.
- Nutritious and gentle: 87% protein and 100% vegetarian.
- Zero waste: microwave the last small piece and it puffs into a crunchy treat your dog can eat safely.
- Sized for your dog: Small up to 10 kg (22 lb), Medium 10 to 25 kg (22 to 55 lb), Large over 25 kg (55 lb) or any power chewer.
It is hard, so not ideal for dogs with fractured or diseased teeth, and it is calorie-dense, so count it in the day's food. Supervise chewing.
See the Original yak chewSee the variety packThe best-known alternative yak chew is the original Himalayan Dog Chew from Himalayan Pet Supply, also made with yak and cow milk and labelled for dogs over 12 weeks.
AyurPet Turmeric and Ashwagandha yak chews, and the variety pack
Our Healing Turmeric Yak Cheese Chew has 4 ingredients (yak and cow milk, lime, salt and turmeric extract) and our Calming Ashwagandha Yak Cheese Chew adds ashwagandha extract to the same base. In Ayurveda, Haridra (turmeric) is the classic herb for comfort and healing, and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) a Rasayana for calm strength, used for over 3,000 years. A chew carries less herb than a dedicated supplement, so think of these as a great chew with a gentle Ayurvedic extra. Our guides to ashwagandha for dogs and the best calming treats for dogs cover what the research does and does not show. The variety pack lets your dog try all three.
Pros: same long chew time; rotation keeps dogs interested. Cons: ask your vet first if your dog takes blood thinners (turmeric) or has a thyroid condition (ashwagandha).
KONG Classic, stuffed and frozen
The KONG Classic is made from natural rubber and is designed to be stuffed with food. Freeze it with your dog's own kibble soaked in water, or plain yoghurt if your vet agrees, and a quick toy becomes a long, calm lick-and-chew session. Rubber bends, which is exactly what VCA recommends. KONG sizes run from XS for dogs up to 5 lb (about 2.3 kg) to XXL for dogs over 85 lb (about 39 kg), and the brand suggests going up a size for power chewers.
Pros: very low tooth risk; reusable; uses part of the daily food so no extra calories. Cons: needs preparing; not edible; replace if damaged.
Bully sticks
Bully sticks are dried bull pizzle. They are softer than yak chews and popular for good reason, but two facts surprise most owners. A 2013 study by Freeman and colleagues in the Canadian Veterinary Journal found 9 to 22 kcal per inch (45 to 133 kcal per stick), so a single 6-inch stick can supply about 9% of a 23 kg (50 lb) dog's daily calories and about 30% for a 4.5 kg (10 lb) dog. Of 26 sticks tested for bacteria, one carried Clostridium difficile, one carried MRSA and seven carried E. coli. Wash hands after handling, and keep them away from young children and immunocompromised people.
Pros: softer on teeth; highly palatable; single ingredient. Cons: calories; smell; hygiene; shorter chew time for strong chewers.
Nylon chews (Benebone, Nylabone Power Chew)
Nylon chews last for weeks because they are not meant to be eaten. Benebone's own safety guidance says nylon is a hard substance that can chip or crack teeth, is not suitable for older dogs with weaker teeth, and should be replaced after about a month, or once more than a sugar cube's worth of product is missing. Nylabone advises replacing a Power Chew if it is damaged, its ends are worn or it has become small enough to swallow. We respect that both brands publish this so clearly. VCA lists nylon chews among the items to remove if you are worried about tooth fractures.
Pros: very long-lasting; no calories. Cons: hard; fragments; not edible.
Chews we would skip
- Antlers and hooves. Very long-lasting, but hard enough to break teeth. VCA notes that chewing hard items such as antlers, bones and non-bending toys is a common cause of fractured teeth, most often the canine (fang) teeth and the large upper cheek teeth.
- Cooked bones. The ASPCA warns that cooked bones can splinter and seriously injure a dog.
- Rawhide. It softens into a gummy mass that some dogs try to swallow whole. See our guide to rawhide alternatives for dogs.
- Quick-eat dental chews (such as Whimzees) are fine treats but are not long-lasting. If dental care is your goal, look for the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal; only specific products are accepted, so check the exact product.
What are the safest long lasting chews for dogs?
The safest long-lasting chews bend or wear down, cannot be swallowed whole, and are given under supervision. VCA's rule of thumb is simple: throw out chews or toys that do not readily bend.
By that strict test, no hard long-lasting edible chew passes, including yak chews. Long-lasting means firm. That is why we would never call any hard chew risk-free, and why your dog's chewing style matters as much as the product. A dog who lies down and gnaws slowly is a very different risk from a dog who tries to crack a chew in half with its back teeth.

Before you hand over any chew
Five habits that make any long-lasting chew safer.
1. Size up
Pick a chew too big to swallow; go a size larger for power chewers.
2. Supervise
Especially with a new chew, and separate dogs while they chew.
3. Take away the last piece
Remove or puff it once it could be gulped whole.
4. Count the calories
Keep all treats and chews under 10% of daily calories.
5. Do the bend test
VCA advises throwing out chews or toys that do not readily bend.
Skip for dogs with weak or broken teeth Antlers, cooked bones and hard nylon. Choose a stuffed rubber toy instead.

Best long lasting chews for aggressive chewers
For aggressive chewers, choose a yak cheese chew one size larger than the weight guide suggests, or a heavy-duty rubber toy, and supervise every session. Avoid antlers and very hard nylon, which strong jaws are most likely to break teeth on.
- Size up. AyurPet recommends the Large yak chew for any aggressive or fast chewer, whatever their size.
- Watch the first few sessions. AyurPet and other yak chew makers advise supervising hard chews, particularly at first.
- Take it away at the end. When a yak chew is small enough to swallow, microwave it for 45 to 60 seconds; it puffs into a light, crunchy treat your dog can eat safely. Follow the instructions on your pack.
- Separate dogs while they chew to prevent guarding and gulping.

Yak chews vs bully sticks vs antlers vs nylon
Yak chews last longer than bully sticks and are kinder to teeth than antlers or nylon, which makes them the best all-round compromise. Here is how to decide:
- Choose a yak chew if you want hours of edible chewing for a healthy adult dog.
- Choose a bully stick for a softer chew for a moderate chewer, and count the calories.
- Choose rubber for puppies, seniors and any dog with dental problems.
- Choose nylon only for supervised, gentle gnawers with healthy teeth, and replace it often.
- Skip antlers and cooked bones.

Natural dog chews: what to look for on the label
A good natural chew has a short ingredient list you can read in one breath, no rawhide, no artificial colours, and a clear size guide. "Natural" does not guarantee "safe": antlers are natural too. Look for:
- Named ingredients, ideally fewer than five.
- A weight-based size guide and an age limit (most yak chews are labelled for dogs over 12 weeks).
- Clear instructions for the end piece.
- Honest dental claims. A chew can help keep teeth cleaner, but it is not a substitute for brushing or professional dental care.
Long lasting chews for puppies
For teething puppies, the best long-lasting chew is a soft, freezable rubber toy rather than a hard chew. Puppy teeth start falling out at about 3 to 4 months to make room for 42 adult teeth, and by about 6 months the baby teeth should be gone, according to the American Kennel Club. The AKC suggests rubber teething toys that can be frozen and edible puppy teething rings, with supervision.
Yak chews from AyurPet and Himalayan Pet Supply are labelled for dogs over 12 weeks. During active teething we would still use softer rubber toys for most chewing, and keep hard chews to short, supervised sessions until the adult teeth are in.
How many calories are in long lasting chews?
Most long-lasting edible chews are calorie-dense, so they should replace part of the day's food, not add to it. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises keeping treats below 10% of total daily calories to avoid nutrient imbalances. Give a long chew in sessions, put it away, and trim meals slightly on chew days, especially for small dogs.
AyurPet's take
We make yak chews because, for a healthy adult dog, we think a cheese chew is the best balance of chewing time, digestibility and simplicity: three ingredients, no rawhide, no meat by-products.
But we would not hand one to every dog. If your dog has a broken or worn tooth, gum disease, or is a senior with fragile teeth, pick a stuffed rubber toy instead. If your dog is a teething puppy, use softer toys for most chewing. And if your dog swallows things whole, stay with them and take the chew away early.
Stop the chew and call your vet if your dog
- Has a chipped, broken or discoloured tooth, or bleeding from the mouth
- Gags, retches or paws at the mouth after chewing
- Vomits repeatedly, stops eating or has a painful, swollen belly
- Swallowed a large piece of chew, nylon or bone
Frequently asked questions
What is the longest lasting dog chew that is safe?
For an edible chew, a correctly sized yak cheese chew lasts the longest for most adult dogs, up to several hours, and wears down rather than splintering. For the lowest tooth risk, a stuffed and frozen rubber toy is safer.
Are yak chews better than bully sticks?
Yak chews usually last much longer and have a shorter ingredient list. Bully sticks are softer on teeth but supply 9 to 22 kcal per inch and some samples have tested positive for bacteria. Choose by your dog's chewing style and dental health.
Are antlers safe for dogs?
We do not recommend them. VCA Animal Hospitals lists antlers among the hard chews that commonly cause fractured teeth in dogs.
How long should I let my dog chew a long lasting chew?
Short, supervised sessions work best. Put the chew away afterwards, and take it away for good once it is small enough to swallow.
What do I do with the end of a yak chew?
Microwave the small leftover piece for about 45 to 60 seconds. It puffs into a light, crunchy treat that is safe to eat. Let it cool first and follow the instructions on your pack.
Can puppies have long lasting chews?
Yes, but choose soft, freezable rubber toys during teething (about 3 to 6 months). Yak chews are labelled for dogs over 12 weeks; keep hard chews to short, supervised sessions until the adult teeth are in.
Do long lasting chews clean dogs' teeth?
Chewing can help reduce plaque, but most long-lasting chews are not tested for it. Only products carrying the VOHC seal have shown a plaque or tartar benefit. No chew replaces brushing or vet dental care.
Every dog chews differently. If your dog has dental problems, is a senior or swallows things whole, ask your vet which chew is right before you buy. Our online vet consultation is there if you need it.
